At the beginning of 2026, we held a “Tea Ceremony Experience” at the Yayoi Japanese Language School.
During their Japanese studies, learners took turns to experience the tea ceremony in the Japanese-style room.
First, taking care not to step on the edges of the tatami mats, they advanced to the front of the tokonoma alcove, viewed the scroll, and observed the flower arrangement. Japanese New Year games were displayed in the alcove: kites, kendama, paper balloons, and hagoita.
Handmade sweets were served first, followed by matcha.Learners listened intently to instructions on how to drink it, feeling rather nervous.
The children also gave it a try; their expressions on their face when tasting the bitter tea were quite memorable.They also experienced preparing the tea themselves.
