Mrs. Mariko Nakayama (An representative of NPO Multicultural Children’s Independence Support Centre, and an representative of the Association for Japanese Language Education in Tokyo) was honoured as a ‘Person of Merit in Education’ by the Nakano Ward Education Promotion Foundation on the 10th of November (Fri).

She has worked as a specialist for overall support of Japanese language  education in Nakano Ward and for children with foreign cultural backgrounds who need Japanese language support at elementary and junior high schools since the foundation of the association. This is now the basis for the overall Japanese language support education in the Nakano International Association’s Japanese language courses. In collaboration with the association, she has also organised high school guidance sessions for parents and children whose home language is not Japanese, and has helped many children with diverse cultural backgrounds and their parents to enter higher education by providing them with advice on higher education. We at the Nakano International Association support the development of people who can contribute to the local community by working with individual children with different languages, roots and length of stay in Japan, watching over their development and supporting their independence.
